UKUncut. An Emergency Operation – Event List – Sat 28th May 2011

Kill the Bill, Not the NHS

An Emergency Operation: Transform the Banks, Save the NHS

Bristol.

Along with other UK Uncut protesters around the country we will show the government we don’t want the NHS privatised by having 2 days of protest from the 27th-28th of May against these reforms & the banks!

To show our opposition we will be holding a mock auction with our own Andrew Lansley selling off the NHS to ‘fat cats’.

There will also be speeches by activists and hopefully some local members of local opposition political parties.

Let’s show the coalition they can’t ignore us and go ahead with plans which will mean the end of National Healthcare in England!!

This needs to be the biggest protest ever so invite your friends, family and even your enemies!!

Castle Park band stand at 1pm.

And we are back for yet another action!

We’ll meet at the Wellington Statue (East end of Princes Street) on Saturday, May 28 at 2pm. Then we’ll disperse and later reconvene at our target, so try to be a bit inconspicuous (i.e. no large obvious placards).

We’d also like to point out that it is perfectly legal to film in public places (the police did not seem to know this at our last protest):

Members of the public and the media do not need a permit to film or photograph in public places and police have no power to stop them filming or photographing incidents or police personnel.

It would ordinarily be unlawful to use section 58A to arrest people photographing police officers in the course of normal policing activities, including protests because there would not normally be grounds for suspecting that the photographs were being taken to provide assistance to a terrorist. An arrest would only be lawful if an arresting officer had a reasonable suspicion that the photographs were being taken in order to provide practical assistance to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism.

Let’s make Lansley listen. We want to keep our healthy NHS and fix our broken banking system. Whilst the NHS is being dismantled, the banks that caused this crisis in the first place have been left untouched. The NHS is under threat of further privatisation from the coalition government’s Health and Social Care Bill. Money that should be spent on improving our health will be going to shareholders as profits, competition will break up the NHS and our health will suffer. To top it all the NHS has to ‘save’ £20bn pounds over the next three years, meanwhile the banks get bailed out to the tune of £100bn a year. Andrew Lansley is clearly deluded if he thinks we’ll stand for this, in fact we think he needs emergency treatment. Trial of the century…NHS vs The Banks

Meet 11am Soho Square!

In a country that is quickly becoming a police state where non-violent, peaceful protesters are victimised, monitored and wrongfully arrestedwe thought we’d put the right people through the judicial process.

Andrew Landsley is pushing through ‘reforms’ to the NHS which Doctors & Nurses & THE PUBLIC are against. We love the NHS and will not stand by and see it turned into THE sale of the century. Whilst front line and other staff are being made redundant from the NHS and other public services the conservative government fronted by PR specialist David Cameron, has given tax break after tax break to the banks and corporations, capitalising on a crisis created by the banks. Andrew Landsley has made it clear. He prefers the private sector. He chooses the super-rich over the people. We see our precious NHS cut in favour of the government looking out for their rich banker mates. Who are the real criminals? Who are the real victims?

YOU DECIDE.

Join us on the 28th of May for an afternoon of unparralled drama, tension, and general tomfoolery.

Manchester UKUncut day of NHS action :
Starts 28th May at 12.30pm in Piccadilly Gardens.
(assemble from 11.30 in the “usual” place.. look for our banners)

This nasty Condem government thinks our NHS is for sale. We are here to tell them its not! This situation has been allowed to happen by the ConDem government, keen once again, to sell off a national treasure. Government advisors are now openly admitting to large American private companies, that the proposed NHS reforms will make them large profit.

Our continued health is not for the profit of large companies.

So on the 28th, we will not be forgetting that tax coffers which fund the NHS, are being drained by large tax dodging companies, who year after year find new slippery ways to dodge tax. Or nowadays, just ask George Osborne for a handout.

Not to mention the greedy banks asking for bailout handouts with no regard to the effect on our society, our country and our NHS.

Come join us to pay a peaceful visit to those well known high street names. Starts 12.30pm in Piccadilly Gardens.

Bring Bandages, fake blood, toy stethoscopes, white coats and maybe nurses outfits (ooh er!)

Most importantly being some costs of the running the NHS compared to the corporate welfare handed out to bankers and corporations.

This is a peaceful protest aimed to engaged the public in what is an essential service to everyone.

We’ll assemble at Grey’s Monument at noon, then tour a number of city centre banks and also Philip Green’s shops with the message – loud and clear – to make the bankers, super-rich and corporations pay, not the NHS and public services. There ARE alternatives to cuts.

Tax evasion and avoidance costs us £120bn per year. The culprits are overwhelmingly the rich and big business. Retrieving this unpaid tax should be a big priority – not attacking the poorest and most vulnerable.

“The banks are due a check-up. On Saturday May 28th, join UK Uncut’s Emergency Operation and transform your local high street bank into a hospital. Tell the government to leave our NHS alone; it’s the banks that are sick.” – From the call-out: http://ukuncut.org.uk/emergency

There is a planning meeting on Tuesday 24th, at 7.00 in the Wig and Pen. On St Giles – contact me for details. At that meeting the specifics will be discussed. Naturally it’s most sensible to keep back the specific target(s) until last possible moment.

This is an emergency. The welfare state is in peril. Under the guise of ‘efficiency’ and ‘reform’, this government is plotting to cut the NHS and sell off what’s left. Andrew Lansley has claimed the government is in a ‘listening exercise’ about the proposed NHS ‘reforms’. But despite widespread outcry from doctors, nurses and the public the government isn’t listening to anyone apart from private healthcare lobbyists.

Let’s make Lansley listen. We want to keep our healthy NHS and fix our broken banking system. Reckless gambling, obscene bonuses and a global financial crisis are symptoms of a disease that requires a drastic intervention.

The current plan includes shedding hundreds of posts, closing 130 beds and shutting two operating theatres.

We plan to meet in Reading on a day in may (join the event and you’ll be informed which day by message) and march on a bank in the town centre with the clear message that it is they who caused this financial mess not us and we will not let them tear apart our welfare state and make us pay for their cock-ups. The banks this year are to recieve a £100 billion state subsidy, but before the election Cameron promised to cut the defic…it not the NHS, we are now faced with the loss of 50,000 NHS jobs. It’s about time we reminded him of his promise.

This is a fight, this is an emergency and we will not take it lying down.

There will be an assembly meeting most likely on University of Reading campus next Saturday 21st in order to democratically discuss a plan of action and to organise as much support as possible.

This will be a peaceful protest in line with all other UK Uncut protests, we will occupy a bank dressed in our finest doctors and nurses outfits kitted out with bandages, medical equipment and lots of banners and noise.

For obvious reasons the location will be kept secret until much closer to the event.

Queer Resistance to transform bank into sexual health clinic W1H

Location: UK » London » W

When: Saturday 28 May 2011, 12:00pm

iCalendar

Where: Soho Square, London W1H 3

Google map

To highlight the 43% cut in NHS Primary Care Trust funding for HIV prevention services in London, which puts gay and bisexual men’s health at risk, Queer Resistance – an independent LGBTQI anti-cuts group – plans to transform a major high street bank in central London into a ‘mock’ sexual health clinic on Saturday 28 May.

Meeting at Soho Square at 12 midday, the lesbian, gay, bi, trans, queer and intersex collective asks attendees of all genders and persuasions to bring doctors and nurses uniforms, scrubs, condoms, lube, dental dams and toys for the event, which is part of UK Uncut’s “Emergency Operation” against Health Secretary Andrew Lansley’s plans for the NHS.

The London Sisters of Perpetual Indugence, part of a worldwide order of Nuns who promote universal joy and expiate stigmatic guilt, will be blessing the gathering on the day and there will be a a range of performers and speakers.

These cuts come as figures show that HIV diagnoses in the UK have almost doubled in the last decade, with a rise of 70 per cent rise in gay and bisexual diagnoses. Given that it is more cost effective to prevent rather than treat a person with HIV over their life time, the implications of these cuts are concerning, not only at a human level, but at governmental level in terms of future economic cost.

When marking World Aids Day on 1 December 2010, David Cameron commented: “We have made a lot of progress in fighting HIV and AIDS so far and I believe that by working together, we can help reduce the stigma, reduce the number of new infections and enable those living with HIV to lead full productive and happy lives.”

These government imposed cuts are not consistent with these comments – and it’s clear we are not “all in this together”. Queer Resistance demands a stop to the slashing of funding for HIV prevention services, in addition to a complete rethink of these ideological cuts which are hitting the most vulnerable in our society. There are alternatives – leave the NHS alone and cut benefits to bankers.

Current cuts to the NHS amount to a £20bn ‘efficiency drive’ whilst taxpayers continue to subsidise the banking sector by up to £100bn/year, which is equivalent to the entire NHS budget.

Groups affected by the funding cuts include GMFA, Terrence Higgins Trust and PACE, who are part of the Pan London HIV Prevention Programme, which is funded by PCTs and commissions a range of small organisations to tackle HIV in the capital.
